Dr. Govand Khalid Azeez is a political economist and philosopher of technology, and Lecturer at Macquarie University. His research examines the historical development of technology and artificial intelligence and their implications for work, society, politics, education and economic development.

Understanding AI Beyond Technological Development
Dr. Azeez’s research examines artificial intelligence as a technological, economic and political development, with particular attention to how societies and institutions can understand, govern and respond to rapidly developing AI systems.
His work considers questions around AI governance, national AI strategy, technological capability, innovation and the broader social and economic consequences of AI. His academic activities include work on the political economy of artificial intelligence and national AI policy.
He has also advised across industry, higher education and emerging economies on integrating AI to address challenges in workforce development, education, economic advancement and innovation.

Examining AI Through Economics, Power and Society
The political economy of AI examines how artificial intelligence is shaped by economic systems, institutions, production, technological power and global inequalities.
Dr. Azeez’s research considers AI within wider structures of global production and economic development, including the relationship between technological advancement and different regions of the global economy. His work considers the opportunities and challenges created by uneven access to technological capabilities, particularly across the Global South.
His research in this area includes work on artificial intelligence and South Asian economies as a specific research area, as well as the political and economic challenges surrounding AI development in Southeast Asia.

A central part of Dr. Azeez’s research examines how technological systems have developed over time and how technology interacts with human societies, economic systems and structures of power.
